People who have worked with me have crafted beautiful, clear visions of their life and health, created the plan to get there, and then made their dreams of a balanced and blissful life come true. They have reduced their stress, boosted their energy, optimized their wellness, and improved their quality of life.
The Dark Night of the Soul
I spent my formative years in a small town outside of Sacramento, California. I grew up with very intelligent, driven immigrant parents who wanted their children to succeed in life. Taking care of myself, I was self-sufficient and independent. I quickly realized I loved caring for people by the time I reached middle school. This immediately made me feel like the correct career path for me was medicine. Therefore, over fifteen years ago, I dove into the medical world excited to become a healer.
A couple years later, however, my life started to swiftly fall apart. I was in the home stretch of my medical training, running out of compassion and inspiration. I was not sure I was providing my patients with quality care and sometimes I felt like a cog in the immense medical wheel. I was stressed, unhappy, and frustrated with no idea why I was on a road that caused me so much suffering. I was busy, but I felt like I hadn’t moved forward in any area of my life. I had no idea what burnout was at this point, but I was definitely feeling it.
I felt emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted, and no amount of sleep helped me. I did not feel like an effective doctor or a loving partner or friend. Unable to stand this, I dove into self-help books, mind–body medicine, seminars, meditation, mindfulness practices, fits of tears . . . anything that would help me out of my hole. Utilizing the practices I learned, I realized I wanted to help others heal themselves and return to the essence of who they really are.
After years of studying and practicing, I wrote “life prescriptions” to my patients to try some of the techniques I learned and lived by. I asked patients to focus on what they aspire to become with regard to their wellness. They started to feel excited about their life, and their health improved! I realized I was onto something.
My pain and suffering was actually helping other people. Most of all, my pain had dissolved into the determination to help others create their best lives. In the last few years, I have been empowering other practitioners and professionals to find and take back their happiness and health.
Stress and burnout have become an ever increasing phenomenon over the last decade. Three quarters of Americans experience physical or psychological symptoms related to stress in a given month:
The physical symptoms of stress include:
- fatigue (51%)
- headache (44%)
- upset stomach (34%)
- muscle tension (30%)
- change in appetite (23%)
- teeth grinding (17%)
- change in sex drive (15%)
- feeling dizzy (13%)
The psychological effects of stress involve:
- experiencing irritability or anger (50%)
- feeling nervous (45%)
- lack of energy (45%)
- feeling as though you could cry (35%)
Now when I look at the list above, I had almost all those signs and symptoms.
But because I did not know that stress could effect me like that, I really did not know how big of a problem this was in my life. The above study found that money, workplace and economic issues are the top three reasons for stress. Among employees, almost two thirds say that suffer high levels of stress in combination with extreme fatigue.
Burnout is a little different. It has three major symptoms, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced performance (usually at work). Work Safe Australia found that burnout contributes to a $20 billion “stress bill” businesses foot every year. In Japan, karoshi or death by overwork, is becoming more of a social concern. Karoshi is often associated with burnout. Studies show that only 20% of American adults are thriving today (Kobau, Sniezek, Zack, Lucas, & Burns, 2010). That’s 80% of us who AREN’T thriving!!
My burnout is an experience I vow to never relive; I never want to feel that way again. This is why I decided to build a business founded on finding a way through this challenge. Today I still use my practices to help me relieve stress and stay far from burnout.
I choose my own path every day and I am blessed to live a magnificent life filled with joy, energy and confidence. I help people uncover their strengths, build healthy living practices, find setback strategies, and drop their limiting beliefs, so they too can live the life they want.
